South Side Home Movie Project produces new film series with Chicago musicians, gives new life to film archive

So to be able to see him on film and see the man who brought our family together – it’s because of him,” she said. Moody donated 18 reels of home movies, which, along with the other donations, are stored in a temperature-controlled vault designed to hold film so it doesn’t deteriorate. “It’s a project that’s really inspired by the belief that people have always documented their own lives in really intimate and powerful ways,” she said.

We aim to build an alternative, accessible visual record, filling gaps in existing written and visual histories, and ensuring that the diverse experiences and perspectives of South Siders will be available to larger audiences and to future generations. Launched in September 2005, the South Side Home Movie Project is a five-part initiative to collect, preserve, digitize, exhibit, and research home movies made by residents of Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods. Our goal is to ensure that the diverse experiences and perspectives of South Siders will be available to a wide public audience, to film scholars, and to future generations. By amplifying the interactivity of our online platform, we will aggregate community knowledge, inviting visitors from various backgrounds to contribute information in the form of comments, anecdotes, data, and additional digital exhibitions. Each of our films offers an intimate glimpse into history, situated within the context of personal relationships and public or private spaces. Capturing insights from community members will enrich the historical record, providing details about specific Chicago neighborhoods as well as midcentury urban life more broadly.

Craig is responsible for the recent uptick of community events, such as installations, hands-on workshops, and screenings, which Stewart said helps spread awareness, increase engagement, and encourage people to donate their own film. At the Peace and Justice Radio Project, she developed a youth media literacy curriculum used in Chicago public high schools and the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Craig coordinates the advisory committee, relays their guidance and feedback to the design team, and organizes the public launch activities, and related outreach/communications. University of Chicago film professor Jacqueline Stewart founded the South Side Home Movie Project in 2005 to collect, preserve, digitize, and exhibit home videos from South Side residents.

They show us how people dress and pose, work and play, travel and learn, celebrate and organize, raise their children and even mourn their dead. These films also jog memories, and incite conversations about people, practices, locations and events that are not always captured in official histories. With its website and curriculum, the Home Movie Project redefines what a historical collection can be by allowing residents to “feel they can contribute to the archives,” said Ellen Placey Wadey, the foundation’s director of Chicago arts and collections. N May 1, the South Side Home Movie Project launched its digital archive, a globally accessible online portal to home movies shot by residents of Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods between 1929 and 1982.

Williams said the archive is always expanding and urged South Siders to search their homes for 8mm and 16mm film reels. "Part of our mission is to re-exhibit these films, to bring them from a basement... and to actually redistribute them so that we can hold these images and these memories in our working minds today," said archivist and project manager Justin Williams. We invited Global Girls, a performing arts organization for young African American women in Greater Grand Crossing, to share their perspectives as younger women and their insight into contemporary modes of self-representation. In a public film screening and conversation moderated by SSHMP director and UChicago film scholar Jacqueline Stewart, these groups will watch and talk along with the audience as family dynamics, sibling relationships, and the everyday lives of South Siders unfold on the screen. Launched as an effort to connect with our communities virtually in spring 2020, the ongoing Spinning Home Movies series has emerged as a new paradigm for meaningful artist/archive partnerships and for robust community engagement. Each episode features a minute set of home movie footage, curated and sound-tracked by Chicago DJs, musicians and performing artists, followed by a live discussion, “The Rewind,” where the production team, guest artists and film donors dig deeper into the episode’s themes.

“One of the things I’m thinking about is expanding the project to include videotape,” Stewart said. “ film was cheaper and it opens up a broader range of family demographics.” Other considerations include partnering with local organizations to help uncover rich materials from more neighborhoods, she said. Hen newly-appointed Chicago Police Board president and developer Ghian Foreman met Stewart in a bookstore where archived footage was being shown, he was immediately compelled to search for his own family’s videos. In March, the Project installed a television at the South Shore Branch Library that played an hour’s worth of home videos depicting moments from women’s lives in honor of Women’s History Month.

When film historian Jacqueline Stewart founded the South Side Home Movie Project 15 years ago, her goal was to preserve, digitize and showcase these films. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project found a creative new way to present the films to a broad audience. We designed the identity and website of the South Side Home Movie Project in direct collaboration with their team of cultural and artistic advisors. Founder Jacqueline Stewart played the foundation, Archivist Justin D. Williams lead the project, and artist Amanda Williams gave us her signature color palette. Together we co-created an important cultural tool and asset for the film-making disciplines, the South Side community, our city, and far beyond — as Chicago’s South Side has had major impacts on the world. Through the five actions of collecting, preserving, digitizing, researching and presenting, the South Side Home Movie Project advances the stories, culture, and impact of South Side residents, ensuring its history is not lost.

The efforts are supported by a $60,000 grant from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, which funds regional collections, land conservation efforts and artistic programs in Chicagoland and the South Carolina Lowcountry. “I would say that we have the largest collection mid-century African-American home movies in the country,” said Candace Ming, project manager and archivist for the South Side Home Movie Project. “The South Side Home Movie Project is an effort to build an alternative visual archive of the South Side,” said Stewart, a professor at the University of Chicago Department of Cinema and Media Studies.

I like SmartDraw for its simplicity and all the other included drawing functions, but it’s not the best for seeing exactly what your cabinets would look like. ✔️It has powerful, pre-designed inspiration rooms for days you’re not feeling creative. It focuses only on kitchen design, making it great for firms with a vested interest in kitchen renovations and remodels. An intuitive user interface, amazing visualization capabilities, and product integration allow ProKitchen to easily live up to its name. ✔️ You also have several starting kitchens to get started with. ✔️ You are given the opportunity to generate a shopping list of the items you would love to buy from the store, through the program.

The software has several sample kitchen islands or use the Cabinet Designer tools and create your own custom kitchen island for an ideal kitchen layout. While the result is the same as Blophome, there are few graphics catalogs to use. This might be a good thing, though, as too many choices can sometimes bog you down with indecision. As far as I can tell, the site is sponsored by the brands whose products appear in the catalog. They pay for the program in hopes you’ll choose their products for your stylized room and buy them for your real home.

While it is difficult to point out any design software and claim it is the best, FOYR NEO is the most easy-to-use, agile, and powerful kitchen design software. Its advanced features such as AI-powered 3D rendering, auto-docking, and pre-built models make it the best kitchen design software. Something as simple as the turnaround time of design drafts can make or break the next project. Section I: General Information About Nursing Homes Selecting a Nursing Home in New York State

While they’re somewhat similar in name and both managed by the U.S. Social Security Administration, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income are different programs. Social Security is an earnings-based program that’s paid for with Social Security taxes. It’s available to older adults, disabled, or blind individuals who’ve paid into Social Security through their jobs for a set time period. Your work history and total earnings determine the benefits you receive. However, if you’re able to afford a private facility, you may not be eligible for SSI benefits as it is.

For example, commonly an individual will enter a Medicare SNF following a hospitalization that qualifies him or her for a limited period of SNF services. If nursing home services are still required after the period of SNF coverage, the individual may pay privately, and use any long-term care insurance they may have. If the individual exhausts assets and is eligible for Medicaid, and the nursing home is also a Medicaid certified nursing facility, the individual may continue to reside in the nursing home under the Medicaid NF benefit. If the nursing home is not Medicaid certified, he or she would have to transfer to a NF to be covered by the Medicaid NF benefit. This health insurance covers the cost of nursing home care for as long as the care is required if an individual is eligible.

What can be done to protect my assets?

District of ColumbiaDC offers a Social Security supplement for room and board in assisted living. The amount of the supplement varies dependent on the number of residents in the assisted living community. This is high relative to most states, but DC also has some of the highest assisted living costs in the U.S. It does offer a small supplement for Georgians residing in Medicaid-approved nursing homes. STATEOPTIONAL STATE SUPPLEMENT / STATE SUPPLEMENTARY PAYMENTS AlabamaDoes not offer financial assistance through the form of an Optional State Supplement for SSI recipients that live in assisted living.

Watch for articles in newspapers and magazines and for television programs that discuss nursing homes. Pick up information on nursing homes from social service agencies or local aging and health departments. This Guide presents a number of State and voluntary agencies that may be able to help. Before it is time for you to be admitted to a nursing home, you should explore what options are available and research each facility. With the help of your doctor and the hospital discharge planning staff , realistically assess your medical, nursing and social needs and seek facilities that can best meet those needs.

Federal requirements specify that each NF must provide, (and residents may not be charged for), at least:

However, if you think that nursing home care is just for the elderly, you're wrong. An SSI recipient who uses nursing home care could be a disabled child recuperating from surgery in a nursing home or an injured young adult who needs life-long, round-the-clock care. Look through finances and get an understanding of how much money is coming in each month in Social Security and other income.

A few states use a different scale entirely; they set the income eligibility level based on a percentage of the state median income. In 2021, to be eligible for the federal SSI benefit, individuals must have less than $794 per month in income. Optional State Supplements – are state-based financial help provided on top of the federal SSI benefit. OSS benefit amounts differ for each recipient and may vary depending on where they live (i.e. at home or in assisted living).

Will my spouse in the nursing home lose their income?

This takes countable assets and transforms them into non-countable income. Your state has set the CSRA limit at $126,420 and your spouse is permitted to retain $2,000 for a combined total of $128,420. Therefore, you must spend $171,580 of the $300,000 before Medicaid will pay for a nursing home. Ask the nursing home administrator for policies on residents' rights and for the booklet entitled "Your Rights as a Nursing Home Resident in New York State and Nursing Home Responsibilities."

Regardless of how it happened, the facility is entitled to your mother’s income, less a small personal needs allowance. So, while their lack of communication was inadvisable, the bottom line is the same. If an individual is paying for nursing home care privately, neither the state nor the federal government apparently becomes involved in the mechanics of how the payments are made. The home can request that the Social Security check be forwarded directly to the home, but the resident or his representative or conservator does not have to agree to it and can, instead, pay the entire bill directly.

The Spousal Impoverishment Law has been put into effect to protect you, the healthy spouse, from becoming “impoverished” by allowing you to keep a certain portion of your and your spouse’s combined, non-exempt assets. Briefly, what happens is that all countable assets are added up and the state Medicaid agency decides how much you can keep of the combined assets. A minimum and maximum CSRA is set by the federal government, which as of August 2022, ranges from $27,480 to $137,400.

When a spouse enters a nursing home paid for by Medicaid and the other spouse is healthy and can live independently, couples have many questions. Some questions are financial in nature, such as what happens to each of the spouse’s income. In this article, we address these pressing questions and concerns in order to put families at ease.

After you apply

Nursing homes charge a basic daily rate for the services they provide. Some nursing homes have all-inclusive rates; others have a rate for room and board, with additional charges for physician's services, laboratory tests, physical therapy, prescription drugs, etc. Each nursing home is required to develop an admission policy and procedure that is in accordance with State and Federal regulations and does not unlawfully discriminate against applicants. However, nursing homes have discretion in making admission decisions and are not required to admit every applicant.

Applying for Medicaid is a highly technical and complex process, and bad advice can actually make it more difficult to qualify for benefits. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, on trial for bribery and fraud, including defrauding a nursing home, pleaded guilty to one count and was sent to jail. This reduction is significant, and can often leave seniors struggling to pay bills. Specific to each state, the general or usual responsibilities of the NF are shaped by the definition of NF service in the state's Medicaid state plan, which may also specify certain types of limitations to each service. States may also devise levels of service or payment methodologies by acuity or specialization of the nursing facilities.
